CHICO, Calif. - The Chico Police Department is warning people about a phone scam.
The police department said they recently received information from a community member who said they received a phone call from someone pretending to be associated with CPD. When they answered the phone, they were told there was an affidavit against them, and authorities were on their way.
The police department said the community member knew this was a scam and ended the call.
Police said the scammer spoofed the police department’s phone number in this instance, so it looked like the call was coming from CPD. Please do not fall victim to this scam. If you receive a call similar to this one, hang up.
The scammer made no monetary requests during this phone call, but as an important reminder, the Chico Police Department will never call anyone or a business soliciting money, police said.
